Frauenwasserl is a great beginner friendly crag just outside Oberammergau. I’ve been there a few times now and with groups, five to seven, usually including some first time climbers. With fifteen routes there are plenty of 4-5 UIAA routes to start off with and then some more challenging ones to hone skills. Its a great place to start climbing outside then expand into other crags in the area.

Getting there from Munich is as simple as taking the train to Murnau then changing for Oberammergau bound alps train, directions. From the Bahnof it a 40 min walk to the crag, kmoot. The crag itself is comprised of a cracked stone walls rising 55 meters directly from the parking / grassy area at the base near / non busy road. There are several anchors 20m up but if you want to do the whole wall I recommend going up 30m so to the big belay ledge and making two pitches out of it. When practicing in climbing in a team of 3 we managed to break it into four pitches some how but is best done in two.

The crag can be busy at times but its a friendly atmosphere. When I was there with children we set up a top rope on one of the easy routes and left it up the whole day with different parties sharing. Even saw young man belaying wearing lederhosen, welcome to Bavarian climbing.
