Biscuits
Little southern home kitchen goodness.
Ingredients
- 7g dry yeast
- 10g sugar
- 2 tablespoons warm water
- 240g flour
- 10g baking powder
- 1g baking soda
- pinch salt
- 120g shortening
- 260g buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 215C
- Sprinkle the yeast and the sugar over the warm water in a small bowl.
- In a larger mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Use a fork or a pastry cutter to cut the shortening into the flour mixture (it should look like fine crumbs).
- Add the yeast-sugar mixture and the buttermilk to the bowl. Stir until ingredients are mostly sticking together a cohesive dough (some crumbles are okay, see photo in post). Press the dough with your hands to about 1/4-inch thick (maybe even a little thicker if you want).
- Cut with biscuit cutter and place on a baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes and brush the tops with melted butter.
